One Machine, One Rented Bay, One Stubborn Idea
Iron Spec Lab opened in 2009 with a second-hand loft and lie machine, a swingweight scale bought at an estate sale, and a conviction that most golfers were playing clubs nobody had ever measured.
It Started as a Complaint
Dale Whitcomb spent eleven years behind a repair counter at a public course on the Georgia side of the river, regripping clubs and pulling broken shafts for members who mostly wanted the job done by Friday. Somewhere around the eighth year he began putting sets on a borrowed gauge before he touched them, out of curiosity more than anything.
What he found became the complaint that turned into a business. Sets sold as matched were routinely a degree or more apart club to club. Irons that had been played hard for a few seasons had drifted, sometimes in opposite directions within the same bag. Golfers were being fitted to new equipment without anyone establishing what the old equipment measured, which made the comparison meaningless.
He rented a bay off Walton Way Extension in the spring of 2009, moved the machine in, and started charging people to find out what they already owned. The fitting side grew out of that, not the other way round.

Four Rules We Have Not Broken Yet
These are not values on a poster. They are decisions that cost us money often enough to be worth writing down.
Read Before You Recommend
No club is suggested until the club it would replace has been measured. Without a baseline, a recommendation is just a preference.
Nobody Earns Commission
Every fitter here is on salary. The financial outcome of your session is identical whether you buy nothing or buy fourteen clubs.
Write It Down
If a number is not on the card, it did not happen. Verbal recommendations evaporate the moment the customer reaches the car park.
Say When It Is the Swing
Equipment cannot fix a technique problem. When the numbers point at the golfer, we say so and recommend a teaching professional.
Fitting for the Turf You Actually Play
Central Savannah River golf has a particular character. Bermuda fairways that grip in August and go dormant and firm by January. Clay underneath that turns unforgiving after a dry stretch. Summer humidity that will finish a set of grips a season early. Several courses around Augusta and Aiken with enough elevation change to make a flat lie board reading only half the story.
None of that shows up in a manufacturer's national fitting chart. It shows up in wedge grind choices, in how much bounce we recommend, in how often we tell a customer their grips are done, and in how seriously we treat lie angle for golfers whose home course has them standing above or below the ball half the round.
We are not fitting for a tour player on perfect turf. We are fitting for someone with a Saturday tee time at a course fifteen minutes from here, and that is a genuinely different job.

A Workshop, Not a Retail Floor
There is no apparel wall here, no shoe wall, no glove rack by the till. The room is a bench, three bays, a rack of demo heads and a machine. If you want to browse, there is very little to browse. If you want to know what your seven iron measures, you are in the right place.
