Nearly Every Putter We See Is Too Long
Retail putters are overwhelmingly built at thirty-four or thirty-five inches because that is what fits a rack. Very few golfers are actually comfortable at that length, and the ones who are not compensate by standing further from the ball, holding the handle further down, or letting the toe of the putter lift off the ground at address.
All three of those change where the ball starts. A putter sitting with its toe in the air points left of where the face appears to aim, and a golfer who has been compensating for that for years will have built a stroke around the compensation.
Cutting an inch off and correcting the lie is a twenty-dollar job on the bench that regularly produces a bigger change in start line than any head swap we could sell you.

What Gets Adjusted, and What It Changes
Length
Sets eye position and how far you stand from the ball. Wrong length is the root cause of most aim problems we measure.
Lie
Decides whether the sole sits flat. A toe-up putter aims left of where it looks, and vice versa.
Loft
Governs how quickly the ball starts rolling rather than skidding. Interacts heavily with how much shaft lean you have.
Hosel & Head
Toe hang and head weight are matched to how much your stroke arcs. Last on the list, not first.
Fitting a head to a stroke that is being produced by a badly sized putter simply locks in the compensation. Length and lie first, always, then read the stroke that emerges once the setup is right.
Start Line, Before and After
The number this bench lives or dies by is start line: how far the ball departs from the intended target line at a fixed distance. We measure it on the roll mat with your own putter first, take a set of ten, and record the spread and the average bias.
Then we do the same with each change. Length. Lie. Loft. Head. If a change does not tighten the spread or reduce the bias, it does not go on the card, however much better the putter looks in your hands.
Speed control matters too, and it is harder to measure honestly indoors. We work it on distance drills across the mat and treat the results as directional rather than definitive, and we say so rather than pretending otherwise.

Most People Should Keep the Putter They Love
Golfers are attached to putters in a way they are not attached to five irons, and that attachment is genuinely worth something on a green. If you have a putter you trust, our strong preference is to adjust it rather than replace it.
Length, lie, loft and grip can all be changed on almost any putter for well under a hundred dollars in total. That is where this bench should start and, for a good half of the people who sit on it, where it should end.
