The Shaft Numbers Worth Writing Down

Shafts attract more marketing language per gram than anything else in the bag. This page strips it back to the handful of measurements we record on a spec card, and explains what each one changes in practice.

Weight Is the Decision. Everything Else Is a Refinement.

If you only get one shaft variable right, get the weight right. It sets tempo, it sets how much control you have over the club at the top, and it moves swingweight and total weight more than any other single change.

Iron Shafts

Roughly 55 g to 130 g

Graphite iron shafts start near fifty-five grams; heavy tour steel runs past one-twenty-five. The gap between a 95 g steel and a 120 g steel is felt immediately by almost every golfer who swings both back to back.

Wood Shafts

Roughly 40 g to 85 g

Driver shafts cluster between fifty and seventy grams for most amateurs. Lighter is not automatically longer — below a certain weight many golfers lose the sense of where the head is and strike quality falls apart.

Wedge Shafts

Match or Go Heavier

Wedge shafts should never be lighter than the iron they follow. A light wedge shaft under a heavy iron set is one of the more common causes of thin strikes from sixty yards.

Flex Labels

R and S Are Not Standards, They Are Opinions

There is no industry body defining what a Stiff shaft must measure. One manufacturer's S can be softer than another's R, and both may be softer than a third company's A-flex. The letter on the label is a marketing shorthand for a bend profile the maker chose, nothing more.

What we measure instead is butt frequency in cycles per minute, taken with the club clamped and the head installed. That number is comparable across brands because it is a physical reading of the assembled club rather than a badge printed on a sticker.

Two shafts both stamped Stiff can sit thirty cycles apart. When we tell a customer their new set will feel different despite carrying the same letter, this is why.

Ranges are our own bench observations from Augusta customers, not a published standard. Your reading depends on head weight, length and grip as much as on the shaft.

Bend Profile

Where a Shaft Is Stiff Matters More Than How Stiff It Is

Two shafts can measure the same overall and still behave differently, because stiffness is distributed along the length rather than sitting in one place.

Firm Butt Section

Adds a sense of control at the top of the swing and through transition. Golfers who load hard early usually prefer it; smooth swingers often report it feels boardy.

Soft Mid Section

Contributes most of what golfers describe as feel or kick. Change this and the shaft feels different even when the tip and butt are unchanged.

Firm Tip Section

Restrains dynamic loft at impact and tends to lower launch and spin. Useful for golfers who deliver a lot of hand speed late.

The honest caveat.

Bend profile differences are real but modest next to weight and length. If a fitter tells you a profile change will add twenty yards, be sceptical. If they tell you it will tighten your left miss by a few yards and make the club feel like it arrives on time, that is a claim we would make too.

Torque & Trim

Two Numbers Golfers Argue About and Rarely Measure

Torque

Torque describes how much a shaft twists along its axis under load, quoted in degrees. Lower numbers resist twisting more. It is often sold as a stability figure, which is half true — it also contributes heavily to how harsh or soft a club feels at impact.

Very low torque in a light shaft frequently feels unpleasantly rigid to a moderate-speed golfer. We have talked more customers out of chasing low torque than into it.

Tip Trimming

Most shafts are supplied long and trimmed to length at both ends. How much comes off the tip changes the effective stiffness materially. A shaft trimmed an extra inch at the tip plays noticeably firmer than the same shaft trimmed to the maker's chart.

This is why we record the trim on your card. Two golfers can own the identical shaft model and flex and be playing meaningfully different clubs.

Length

The Cheapest Change With the Biggest Consequences

Half an inch of length moves swingweight, frequency, lie angle at address and strike location all at once. It costs almost nothing to change and it changes almost everything, which is exactly why we test it before we discuss buying anything.

Swingweight

Roughly three points per half inch on an iron, before any weight is added back.

Frequency

Lengthening softens the assembled reading; shortening firms it.

Effective Lie

Longer clubs sit more upright at address for the same posture.

Strike

Centre-face contact usually improves as length comes down, up to a point.
