Fourteen Things People Ask at the Counter
Answered the way we would answer them standing in front of you, which means occasionally the answer is that you do not need what you came in for.
I am a fifteen handicap. Am I good enough to be fitted?
This is the most common question we get and the answer is that handicap is close to irrelevant. A low handicapper repeats a swing well enough that a small equipment error shows up as a consistent, correctable pattern. A higher handicapper often gets more out of a fitting, because a lie angle that is two degrees wrong is doing real damage to a swing that already has variability in it. The only golfer we hesitate over is one in the middle of rebuilding their technique with a coach.
How long does a session take?
A single club bay runs forty-five minutes. An iron set specification is ninety. A full bag is three hours and we mean three hours — bring water and do not schedule anything immediately after. A spec check with no fitting attached is about half an hour.
What should I bring?
The whole bag, even if you only think you need one club looked at. Also the shoes you actually play in, and a glove if you wear one. If you have been fitted before anywhere, bring whatever paperwork you were given. If you know your typical scores, that helps; if you do not, we will work it out from the conversation.
Do I have to buy clubs at the end?
No, and roughly a third of iron sessions end without a purchase. If your set is fundamentally right and just needs bending, regripping or a length change, that is what the card will say. Nobody here is paid on what you spend, so there is no incentive pulling the recommendation in either direction.
My irons were fitted three years ago. Do I need it done again?
You probably do not need a fitting. You very likely need a spec check. Lofts and lies move with play, particularly on forged heads and particularly if you practise off mats. Our own re-check data shows most sets have at least one club that has moved half a degree or more within a season. That is a forty-five dollar reading, not a new set of clubs.
How often should I regrip?
In this climate, more often than the national advice suggests. Rubber grips on a set played twice a week are usually done inside twelve months here, and heat plus humidity plus sunscreen residue is the reason. The practical test is whether you find yourself gripping harder in humid conditions. If so, they are gone.
Can you work on clubs I did not buy from you?
Almost always, and most of our service work is exactly that. The exceptions are heads that will not survive bending — some cast alloys crack rather than bend past a certain point — and a handful of proprietary hosel systems we do not stock the adaptor for. We will tell you at the counter, before any money changes hands.
Is a launch monitor session enough on its own?
No, and this is the thing we disagree with most of the industry about. A launch unit tells you what happened; it does not tell you why. Without knowing what the club measured before you swung it, an improved number could be the new head, the new shaft, the different length, or simply your fourth ball being better struck than your first. Baseline first, then data.
Do you fit left-handed golfers?
Yes, with the caveat that our demo cart is smaller on the left-handed side than the right. Most head families we carry are available in left-handed builds but fewer are in the shop to hit on the day. Call ahead and we will pull what we can before you arrive.
What about juniors?
Half price on every bay session for sixteen and under, and length changes as they grow are labour-free for twelve months after a fitting. Junior fitting is mostly about length and weight, and getting it wrong is genuinely harmful to a developing swing, so we would rather see them cheaply and often.
Do you take walk-ins?
For service work, always — regrips, bending, extractions, spec checks. For bay sessions, only if a slot happens to be free, which on a Saturday it will not be. Weekday mornings are the best chance.
How long does a build take once I order?
Stock heads and shafts that are on the shelf: usually two to three days, because epoxy needs a full day to cure properly and we will not rush that. Special orders depend entirely on the supplier and run anywhere from ten days to eight weeks for premium putters. We quote the real date, not the hopeful one.
Is the session fee refunded if I buy?
It is credited in full against any club built here within ninety days of the session. One credit per session. It is not refunded as cash if you buy nothing, because the reading and the card are the thing you paid for and you keep both.
Do you sell golf balls, shoes or apparel?
No. This is a workshop with three bays and a bench. There is nothing to browse and we would rather send you to a retailer who does that job properly.
